Cade’s Cove is one of the earliest settlements of European-descent Americans in the Appalachian Mountains, located in eastern Tennessee, just outside of Maryville. Interestingly, the first couple settling there did not first gain a treaty with the Native Americans. Instead, they just moved in and hoped for the best. As it turned out, the friendly Cherokees in the valley helped them survive their first winter, and later sold them a sizable purchase of land.
